This is a charcoal drawing, done from life, on 18"x24" paper.
We've been talking recently, in the comments section of the previous post, about models falling asleep while posing. For this pose, at least, it was entirely appropriate.
Jean, I just might. One thing I’m considering seriously for my new Author’s Press Series is to feature a painting, drawing, sketch, or photograph by someone whose work I admire. I haven’t thought it through completely yet, but the idea appeals to me, and it might also be helpful to artists. Or it could ruin their careers.
This isn't from art center; it predates the drawing class I took there in the summer of 2007. It's from an uninstructed model session at a place that no longer exists. The first figure drawing class I took was at PCC in around 2003 or 2004. It was there that I learned about uninstructed figure sessions and started going to those at private art studios, but the places kept going out of business.
PA, I couldn't stop thinking about that model at PCC you described - the one with lots of make-up, who would fall asleep. I was trying to think of her name. It came to me. Pearl. Is that it? I remember her well.
Lately, I've been using life drawing as a starting place for works that combine reality, imagination and experience.

Wonderful — a spirit-landscape from an ancient mythology. And what a great cover for a book.
ReplyDeleteVery nice work, JS.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I need some sleep right now as well! In fact, I could join her.
Wow. I like the fingers.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. My new favorite. The face, the stomach -- all of it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, all.
ReplyDeleteWilliam, this does feel like a landscape. Do you have a book this fits?
CP, get your sleep--very important.
Margaret and AH: Seems like some shared vibe lately; we've all had some more romantic than usual posts.

ReplyDeleteI see the date is 2006. You've been studying the figure a long while (pre 2006?) art center?
ReplyDeletethis is beautiful the way you have her filling the page
Thanks, PA.

Ever since I mentioned the art model license plate, I haven't seen the car. Damn.

ReplyDeleteJean, a very good drawing!
Thanks, Shanna. The model story continues. . .
ReplyDeleteAH, maybe the model's on vacation? It is the season.
