Young Woman Wearing Glasses

I drew this Monday, from life. Charcoal, 18"x24".

  1. JS, I'm attracted to this woman. However, her chin and/or neck distract me, as well as her stubble.

That might seem funny coming from a dog, but that's just my preference.

  2. Wonderful - is that a reflection behind her? I really like how this is composed.

  3. I like her expression, its bored and reflective at the same time. The "mark" of a good portrait, is capturing expression, at least it seems to to me.

  4. Good portrait with subtle display of light.

  5. Bored and reflective? Interesting. I was thinking reflective and unsettled.

  6. Based on which monitor I use to ck this woman out, she looks one way to me or another. One is much better than the 2nd.

  7. CO, I'm glad to know that some of the issues you have with this drawing solve themselves with a change in monitor. What I was going to reply to your first comment is that I think your attraction/distraction is perceptive. This model struck me as painfully thin, and I was distressed as I was drawing.

Katherine, thanks. The rhythm of the page is my favorite part of this. It is her reflection in the mirror that she was leaning against. I felt, for the first time in a while, a very strong desire to be painting this (and frustrated because I didn't have paints with me).

Thanks, Virginia. I think you are also perceptive. This was the model's first time posing and at times she was nodding off. She was definitely reflective.

AH, as for unsettled, that feels like the essence of this drawing to me.

Thank you, Annie. I think light was so important because I'm feeling a strong urge to be painting.

  8. I always look towards the line work. For me the decisive line is what holds the rubs, smears and dabs together. Once again you've made exceptional choice in the way you've framed the face (pretty lips too).

    I learn from you

  11. Wonderful drawing. I love the strength and energy of your marks.

I'm wondering if you are familiar with the drawings of Jerome Witkin. I have seen them at the Jack Rutberg Gallery and his stlye and touch come to mind when looking at this. I'm glad you got a chance to watch one of the videos of the interview with him that I posted. Am enjoying yours, cafe's and pasadjacent's comments very much.

  14. Thanks, Margaret, Shanna, anima-base and Casey.

Shanna, I didn't know Witkin's drawings, but now, thanks to you, I've checked out some of them.

PA, thanks for the heads up. The work looks fabulous. Congratulations to you and Mr. V.
