Head In Orange And Purple; Woman Reading At Mozart's

From life.

Head In Orange And Purple was drawn this morning, indoors.  Water-soluble marker and ink on 11"x14" Bristol paper.

Woman Reading At Mozart's was painted Monday morning, outdoors by the water at Mozart's, a local coffee place.  Oil on 20"x24" canvas.

  3. I also like both. Purple and orange--I don't know that I've ever seen those two paired in a way that carries a painting. And they're especially curious choices given the woman's serious (superior? imperious?) posture. "Curious" is a good thing here; the combinations of color and pose make her speak to me and maybe worry me some.

The angle of her head in the bottom painting also seems unusual in a way that commands attention. "Texture" seems like a relevant word too. And here I go off the deep end--something about texture, color, and the structure of her face and here remind me of The Potato Eaters.

  4. Hello Jean, both paintings are nice. I like the orange in the top one, a vibrant color. I dig the name of the coffee place where you painted these...Mozart's.

  5. Oh, I really enjoy the second one. Looks like an illustration from one of my favorite children's books.

  6. I like the bottom one too. The first one seems sad.

  7. I always love your marker drawings- I appreciate how you set up tone and dimension.
I admit, I'm a big sucker for your oil work. I can see your oils in a museum setting. This oil you've posted is no exception. Gorgeous work!

  8. Such different styles and moods. I love the hair and the background in the second but the first makes me stop and reflect. The woman looks stoic, as if she's got many stories of hardship bottled up inside her.
