Face in Blue

Drawn from life.

Pastel on sanded card, 9"x12".

This was sketched last year, during our record-breaking hot weather in Austin.

  1. This is very nice Jean. I like the expression on her face and your choice of blues for depth as well as highlighted definition. Beautiful portrait.

  3. Beautiful. Reminds me of a classic although I can't remember who by.

  4. Blue fits her expression, but it's also a bit bright, and that way it gets past the conventional "blues" and melancholy associations.

  5. It's seductive. The mouth is so appealing, curving up at the corners, bow at the top, and the full lower lip.

  6. Thank you, all.

AH, the mouth is my favorite part of this sketch.

Mostly what the sketch evokes for me is last summer, with its shimmering relentless heat.

  7. Thanks, Liz. That's the part that feels like overwhelmming heat to me.
