Woman in Red and Green; Woman in Red and Purple

Drawn this morning, from life.

Woman in Red and Green is pastel on 12"x16" black pastel paper.

Woman in Red and Purple is pastel on 12"x16" grey Ampersand board for pastels.

Last night I went to see this exhibit. Amazing stuff. Especially charming to see very early photographers working hard to emulate paintings by deliberately putting some of the image in soft focus, or by coloring the negative of a landscape to produce a lighter sky, or by various other stratagems.

  1. This is like a lovely gift at the end of the day, the way the light is playing off her skin, the figures?/painting? in the background, a bit of a mystery.

    And red and blue sunlight.

  3. Thanks, Paula. Once again, I arrived so late I was practically in another room.

CO, thanks and great to hear from you. I've been thinking about you.

PA, thanks. I thought of it as patchwork while I was doing it (not that I've done patchwork, but I've seen plenty), but stained glass is a better metaphor.

The second piece is a five-minute sketch on board; the surface is amazing--grabs the color and allows the colors to seem much more intense (I used some of the same pigments in both drawings).

Now, please excuse me. I need to go bake some cookies.

  4. I had not heard of Ampersand board. I will have to try it.

These are terrific! Also, I'm glad to know that you've been to the museum.

  5. Shanna, it's my first experience with the board. According to the manufacturer's web-site, it still needs to be put behind glass (ah, well).

Still haven't been to the Blanton, but getting much closer with the Ransom Center, which was terrific. Maybe this week for first visit to the Blanton.

  6. I made a tile that actually looks quite similar to the woman in red and green. I didn't do it in a morning, however -- it took maybe a couple of days.

  9. Re: your question, no I haven't in about a year, but after my current contract is over, I plan to go back for at least a few months. I left because I ran out of ideas, but I have an idea now.

  11. PA, I figure I can re-use the board if I screw it up.
