Seated Woman in Ink; Storing Drawings

SEATED WOMAN IN INK

Drawn from life in 2006, ink on 18"x24" white drawing paper.

One of my favorite drawings from life.

STORING DRAWINGS

We are scheduled to have a house guest in June, so it's time to organize and stow some artwork away.  That way, our guest gets enough space to be comfortable.

I want to store the papers flat, ideally in portable, sturdy and inexpensive containers.

My latest idea for portable, relatively cheap storage for my drawings are the acid-free cardboard boxes sold to store things like wedding gowns in.

I bought four archival boxes from The Container Store for this purpose. I've assembled the boxes--easily done, once I  ignored the instructions, with their Tabs A and B and C.   The boxes are fine for the purpose.

But I still need an even larger box, for my widest pieces.  It appears that a business called PrintFile has boxes that meet storage needs for my larger drawings.  And the boxes are sturdier, with metal reinforced corners.  Problem approaching solution, yippee!

Green/Yellow; Gestures on Brown Paper; Daniela Rossell (Ricas y Famosas)

Drawn from life, different days, different models.

Green/Yellow is black ink over Tombow marker with brush and water, on watercolor paper, about 5"x8".

Gestures on Brown Paper is drawn from one-minute poses.  Charcoal on cut open shopping bag

SFMOMA, where I found some Lichtenstein imagery for my last post, has a fascinating feature:  Short video interviews with artists.

Check out  Daniela Rossell, on her book of photographs, Ricas y Famosas and on femininity, to get you started.  Gorgeous photos and interesting genesis for her project.

I now have a copy of  Ricas y Famosas.  The photos are gorgeous and the context of the work is much clearer.  The photos, taken together, are about wealth in Mexico; how the very very rich live.  Rossell is a member of this privileged group.  The photos started with close friends and family and grew from there.  The subjects decided how and where and with what they would be photographed.

In 5 Minutes . . . More Or Less: A Preview Of My Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook

I've cut and glued and photographed and processed my little drawings for the Brooklyn Art Library's Sketchbook Project.

The book, with the original drawings, is ready to be mailed off to the library, where it will become part of a traveling exhibit of people's art.

While the sketchbook project is closed for this year, the Library has other projects going. Each project seems to involve filling a small notebook with something like story or photos or . . . and mailing it in to the Library, where it is exhibited with others of its ilk: A fun thing to do for yourself or with a group, maybe with children.

Meanwhile, enjoy the movie of the sketchbook, at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt9_imvbNtA

This is my first stab at "movie." I tried to photograph the sketches so they looked like part of a notebook--which they now are. The best part of this sketchbook is all the different papers I used; it's tactilely pleasing.

Keeping a sketchbook is good for drawing skills. It's also pleasant to have a little book that records drawings from a particular time and place, in this case, Austin in November 2010.

I am looking forward to seeing all the notebooks, when they come to Austin.

Tuesday's drawings

These are drawings from this past Tuesday, the last uninstructed modeling workshop of the quarter at Art Center. Once again, these were poses in the 5 to 15 minute range. The drawings are on 18"x24" paper, each figure occupying about a quarter of that space. The first two images are of graphite drawings; the last three images are of ink drawings.

I am glad I took this summer to focus on quick drawings from life. In the fall, I want to focus on longer poses from life, the so-called painting poses, where the model returns to the same pose throughout the entire modeling session.
