"Cloudy Morning on a Ficus" and "Ficus on a Cloudy Morning"

These two paintings, each on approximately 20"x24" shellacked hardwood boards, are my two takes on the same morning scene. On the left, I painted the sky, then outlined the tree limbs. On the right, I painted the tree limbs. There are bits of green and glimmers of light in each, in honor of the courageous acts of those who speak out, everywhere, despite great peril to themselves.

  1. Ah, yes. Beautiful. And why shouldn’t trees have moods?

  2. These are both beautiful Jean. I love the modeling of the limbs.

  3. The bits of green are very good indeed, and I like the paintings side by side here.

  4. Ode to the beautiful ficus! How very fitting since these soulful beauties have fallen victim to the city worker's chainsaw these days.

I love the subject matter and you've made beautiful paintings.

  5. Wow Jean
The way you've flattened the form on the left while keeping the surface agitated is impressive. Blue palate is gorgeous...great mood. You really know how to push colored mud.

  6. This week when I see green, as in your paintings, I think of Iran and the high price some people (perhaps most people) must pay to pay to protest against what they know to be wrong.

I also hope people are clicking onto to your paintings so as to see how all the great details that go into each one.

  7. I'm clicking. And that blue, my lord, I just love that one.

  8. I clicked, too and I have an affinity for the blue as well. Your words, too, Jean. How do they do it? I don't know if I would have the courage.

  9. Love the blue. I love how artists help us see the colors in things that we never notice ourselves.

  10. Thanks, all. I've been running around Southern California with a twelve year old relative this week, so I haven't had much time to do much blogging or painting, but I very much appreciate your kind comments.

PA, I do love the colored mud.

K and Petrea, this past week was a special reminder of how important freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are and how valuable.

Mllegramophone, I also love the ficus trees and have been sad about the loss of many of these trees in the name of smoother sidewalks. That happened in the shopping district of Pacific Palisades a several years ago. Is it also happening in the San Gabriel valley?
