Monday Morning Woman

Drawn from life, yesterday morning, at Ruta Maya.

Tombow marker and ink, with water and brush, on Bristol.

The smaller sketch can serve as a thumbnail, with sufficient light and dark information, if I decide to paint this.

It was very dark inside the cafe yesterday morning.  And it was crowded with holiday get-togethers, including one revolving around a doula and her clients and their small children.  Several of the children came by to watch me paint the portrait and ask questions.

  1. Had to google Doula.

So, an audience does not distract you?

  2. Camptown Races comes to mind when I see "Doula". My wife's one.

Did the person hold the pose for you?

    You really have a talent.

  3. Nice - today is the winter solstice - maybe that's why the colors are darker.

  4. I know I wanted you to go back visiting your Jean the Painter of Cafes phase but you didn't have to fly to TX for me!

    Fine work. Thank you, JS!

Is this a random customer or a model?

  5. This is wonderful. I like the spontaneous lines and colors, especially like knowing this happened in a life drawing session. Would have liked to have watched you work.

  6. I like both of these! Isn't it neat how children are so open? Wish I were that way.

  7. Love her neck and how the color sort of bleeds. THe colors are really wonderful.

  8. AH, I'm not sure when it became the common term for midwife-type, but it definitely is. "Doula" is how the person in question identified herself, and in the context of all the pregnant and recently pregnant women, the meaning was obvious.

  9. Pierre, your wife has a marvelous job, judging from all the happy women surrounding the doula at Ruta Maya.

The model was hired for the morning by a group of us. This is a loose group. One person takes it upon herself to hire a model and secure a location and time and emails others, asking for rsvps. That way, the cost is manageable, since we divide it.

  11. Cafe, anything for you.

    We hired the model.

  12. Anthony, thanks.

Anthony and AH, I don't mind an audience. And the kids were extra fun; the stuff they said was so spontaneous, kidlike. (Unlike what has become kind of a tortured response, here.)

Bottom-line, I have fun when I draw and paint, and like people around.

  13. Pamo, I agree. Kids are great--and this youngish crew was delightful.

  14. Margaret, thanks. (And your most recent post was so touching, I got completely tongue-tied.)
