Woman Falling Asleep While Reading; Woman Sleeping Sitting Up

 Painted this morning, from life.

Woman Falling Asleep While Reading is oil on masonite board.

Woman Sleeping Sitting Up is oil on canvas.

The model this morning posed reading a book.  It was warm inside and the book got dull, so she kept drifting asleep.

  1. In the bottom figure you've caught that expression, upon dipping into sleep, when the jaw starts to loosen up.

    Every day. Well disciplined.

  2. “While Reading” — marvelous; perhaps still reading, or listening, in her mind.

  4. I love that she kept falling asleep. Maybe still recovering from New Year's?

  5. PA, the brushes are feeling less alien each time I use them.

And playing around with pastels and markers is definitely influencing how I'm painting with oils.

  6. William, she was reading, intermittently. But definitely nodding off, in the warmth and relative quiet.

  7. Margaret, she actually was quite bright-eyed and put together--cheery,even--when not trying to hold this one position for 20 or so minutes at a time.

  8. That's just darned good. Ok, that's not enough, what do I like -- the chin, the mouth, the cock of the head, the pensive eyelids and stony cheeks. This is picture #2.

  9. She may have been nodding off, but the top picture commanded my attention as immediately and strongly as anything I've seen of yours. I suppose it's the reds and oranges?

Wish I were conversant with lines, surfaces, brushes vs. markers, the way you and PA are. So I'll stop at "I like it"--in a red-orange kinda way.

  10. OH Jean! I just love the line and expression you achieved in these works. I can get the feeling of relaxing in a visceral way! I had fun scrolling through your recent work; splendid!

  11. Is there any method of making a mark you are not skilled in? Wonderful!!!

  12. What I meant earlier was something like "jumped off the page"--and page = masonite, of course.

  13. I like PA's observation about the jaw - isn't she one with an eye for the details! The whole effect makes me feel relaxed.

  14. It's interesting how the colors surrounding her face are so alive and energetic yet the expression is pure relaxation, in the second one. I keep coming back to look at it.

  15. Thanks, all.

AH, your description reads like poetry.

Banjo, glad you like it. You have a consistent love of red and orange. Even if I didn't know from your blog that winter's not your favorite time, I'd probably be able to figure it out from this strong preference.

  16. Thanks, Peggy and Pamo. I'm glad you are liking these.

Starting painting again has not come easily to me. I'm just doing it and seeing what happens.

  18. Thank you

it's nice o have one's experience acknowledged and appreciated; as opposed to eviscerated

  19. Jean, you and art have told me something about myself I only sort of knew (make it bright! unless you don't). Subject for a post: "an art-illiterate on color." Whaddya think?

  20. Kate, I played around with color and detail, but I stayed really close to the feeling of this model's pose.

    Banjo, run with it.
