Woman In Red Glasses, Reading; Woman In Red Glasses And Blue Scarf

Painted/drawn this morning, en plein air (outdoors), by the lakeside.

Woman In Red Glasses, Reading is oil pastel on 11"x14" canvas.

Woman In Red Glasses And Blue Scarf is oil pastel on approximately 12"x20" card.

The model, a dancer, was reading an art theory book, courtesy of one of the painters. Her glasses, highly decorative, are purely a fashion accessory.

In the background you can see a white swan and several black coots.  Coots are funny ducklike creatures with chicken feet and loud querulous voices.  Don't know if any of these coots are old.

I expect to paint the background and leave the foreground pretty much as is shown, here.

The drawing of the face will probably change a bit, as well.

  1. There are so many here I'd like for my very own. Any chance you'll be offering this? http://jeanspaintings.blogspot.com/2010/09/woman-in-flower.html

  3. I just realized, PA and I were both guessing wrong. we were sure you'd choose something wrapped in blue.

  4. Jean,
The expressiveness of your work is your gift. Your vision is very unique, such a free quality, simply beautiful. I'm in awe!

  5. Pamo, thanks! (And are you really doing the November book-writing challenge? I'm very gullible.)

  8. Ha Ha! I'm gullible too Jean, but yes, I am. It's not going to be an actual printable novel, but more a way to get me in the habit of writing in volume. I'll keep you posted!

  9. Pamo, I'm your audience. I read and read and read, so, go ahead, write and . . . .

  10. I rather like the way you rendered that purple scarf. What do you plan to replace the background with in the first image?

(eventually I'll probably put up a few tiles in a future post; maybe someone will cover the Lake Los Angeles project)

  11. Didn't realize I'd been THIS AWOL. I'm torn here. I actually prefer her reading, but I suppose the wild-haired head shot is arguably more interesting. Red glasses a nice and distinctive touch. Ditto the tattoo a day or two ago.

  12. PA, thank you. I'm planning on keeping the background subject-matter the same, just painting it, rather than drawing it. I don't like that I started with a white canvas and want more texture and color in the painting.

Okay, Banjo. You're allowed to have a life. Glad to hear from you, though. Wait to judge until I get around to changing these pieces. (And I liked the tattoo, too. That was a gift for my spouse.)

  16. K, it's the materials; the oil pastel works much like crayon on canvas or sanded paper. And thanks.
